Transport strike called off

RSS

BHAIRAHAWA, NOV 13 - The indefinite transport strike announced by Siddhartha Transport Entrepreneurs’ Committee regarding the controversy over the issue of route permit was called off on Tuesday afternoon following verbal assurances to provide route permit by a meeting of the Transport Management Committee.
Transport Management Office, Butwal, and the Siddhartha Transport Entrepreneurs’ Committee were in a spat since Monday evening after the former refused to issue route permits for transport vehicles operated by the latter.
President of the Transport Entrepreneurs’ Committee, Deepak Raj Sharma told journalists that the office chief had been denying them the route permit without the give and take of money.
He said the transport entrepreneurs had to pay Rs 18,000 as ‘bribe’ per vehicle for taking the route permit and added that the committee was compelled to call a transport strike to protest this malpractice.
He accused that the transport entrepreneurs had paid as much as Rs 125,000 for acquiring the route permit for their vehicles.
In this connection, chief of the Transport Management Office, Tek Pokharel, denied having taken any bribe and said investigation would be carried out if any other employees are found to be involved in financial malpractice regarding this.Posted on: 2003-11-12 08:34
