Rebels kill cop, two others
- 3 rebels killed in security actions
KATHMANDU, NOV 12 - Maoist rebels killed a policeman and two other people, including a Maoist fugitive, in the latest incidents of violence across the country, according to reports.
Three Maoists were also killed in security actions in Dhankuta and Panchthar districts. Two rebels were killed in Panchthar’s Amsubhanjyang area and another one in Dhankuta’s Khuwafok VDC.
In Kailali, rebel Maoists shot dead head-constable Ranga Lal Khadka, 36, at Bhajani Bazaar today afternoon. Plain-clothes Khadka had arrived in the bazaar for an official business when two armed rebels shot him dead at point-blank range.
A report from Dang stated that a group of suspected Maoists shot dead Shri Harsha Subedi, a teacher of Manpur Secondary School at Tribhuvan Municipality-11 this morning. Police suspect that it was the handiwork of the Maoist rebels. The rebels fled the scene on a motorcycle owned by the teacher.
Likewise, the rebels killed a Maoist fugitive, Rajesh Gurung, in Kerwani VDC, Rupandehi, according to a report from Butwal. It is learnt that Gurung had deserted the party along with arms. Locals said that the rebels accused him of indulging in robbery.
The rebels in Dhading claimed the responsibility of killing Raju Bishwokarma of Mulpani VDC-4 and Sun Bahadur Tamang of Darkha VDC. Deputy-Chief of Maoist Joint People’s Committee Jeevan Thapaliya said both of them were sentenced to death as per the party’s decision, as they were collecting forced donation posing as Maoists. The rebels in Pyuthan district abducted two people.
A report from Baglung said that about a dozen families of Faparkhet village in the Narethanti VDC have fled their home after the rebels threatened to kill all of them over the murders of three Maoist cadres by the security forces three weeks ago. Locals said that there are only six women and a four-year-old boy left in the village. The rebels accused the villagers of tipping-off the security forces about the Maoists taking shelter in the village. All the men had fled their home out of fear of Maoist intimidation shortly after the security action. “Now, even women have also abandoned their homes,” said a man from a neighbouring village.
Meanwhile, in Syangja, normal life in the district remained paralysed due to the Maoist-called bandh in protest against the killing of their three cadres by security forces in Nibuwakharka VDC. No vehicles were seen plying on the Siddhartha Highway and all educational institutions as well as markets remained closed for fear of life. But no violence was reported during the bandh.Posted on: 2003-11-11 08:38
