Kathmandu gun down Nepalgunj

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, NOV 12 - A good team effort kept Region No 3 (Kathmandu) in the Under-17 National League Cricket Tournament title contention after they defeated unbeaten Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) by 47 runs today at the TU Cricket Ground.
Electing to bat first, Kathmandu scored 203/5, the highest total of the tournament so far, and bowled out Nepalgunj for 156 runs in 34.2 overs. Nepalgunj had won both the earlier games while Kathmandu too have two wins from three games now.
For Kathmandu, every batsmen contributed for the total with opener Suraj Maharjan scoring the highest - 37. His fellow opener Monik Shrestha made 24 off 29 deliveries before being caught by Dhan Bahadur off Shahid Riza in the seventh over.
Suraj, who added 70 runs with Bantu Bataju for second wicket, played 58 balls and hit two fours. Bantu scored 34 off 41 balls while Ravi Thapa remained unbeaten on 36 off 45 balls with three fours. Paras Khadka too made 21 off 39 balls while Raj Shrestha got 16 in 24 deliveries. The only weak aspect of Kathmandu was the failure of batsmen to convert good starts into big scores and they were helped by 28 extras.
No bowlers really dominated the innings as five bowlers, Shahid Riza, Irfan Siddique, Imran Khan, Mahesh Poudel and Anil Thapa, took a wicket each.
Mahesh Chhettri too gave good start to Nepalgunj scoring 33 runs off 38 balls with four fours. But regular fall of wickets at the other end ended Nepalgunj’s chances. When Mahesh was caught by Sujan off Paras Khadka in 14th over, they were already reeling at 63/4.
Irfan Siddique, Imran Khan and Mahesh Poudel halted the wicket-fall but their efforts were more for honourable loss than for victory. Siddique ran himself out in 13 while Imran got 28 off 34 balls before giving catch to Bantu off Raj’s bowling. Mahesh Poudel too became victim of run out at 14.
Raj Shreshta claimed two wickets while five others took one each.Posted on: 2003-11-11 09:16
