TU part-timers
NOV 11 - Part-time teachers teaching at different campuses of Tribhuvan University (TU) have been agitating for some time demanding that there be an increment in the remuneration and permanent appointment be given to those who have completed two academic sessions.
Concerning the first demand, it is a convincing one. The per-period remuneration that a part-time teacher at TU gets is NRs 60-75, depending upon the level at which the teacher teaches. When 15 percent income tax is levied on these amounts, the take-home package becomes smaller. The University should at least triple the remuneration.
So far as the second demand is concerned, it sounds somewhat ridiculous. There are about 2,400 part-time teachers currently working at various campuses of the University; many of them take only one or two classes per week. How can the agitators demand that they be hired permanently, without fulfilling certain requirements (written exams and interview?) This gives the impression that those vying for automatic permanency are not confident enough to sit for the exams. Frankly speaking, the demand for automatic permanency is much worse than the demand for time-bound Readership. As a matter of fact, all appointments and promotions should be merit-bound, not time-bound!
