VAT receipt for sim card

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, NOV 12 - From where did you buy your mobile set? Do you have a VAT receipt to show for it? These are the questions the NTC officials will ask you before granting a Sim card. And your inability to produce a tax cleared purchase bill would shatter all dreams of tucking a sleek mobile set in the waist.
This new provision has been introduced after a large number of mobile sets selling in the domestic market were found to have been imported illegally, a source at the Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) told The Kathmandu Post.
A decision to this effect was taken jointly by the Ministry of Information and Communications, Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI), Inland Revenue Department, and Nepal Telecommunications Corporation today.
About 100,000 mobile phones – 59,000 post-paid and 36,000 pre-paid lines – are currently in use in Nepal, but none of these sets are registered with the Department of Customs. Posted on: 2003-11-11 08:19
