TAPLEJUNG, NOV 12 - Maoist rebels today looted a huge amount of money from three foreign trekkers in the Mt. Kanchanjungha region and dismantled a makeshift tent of a British trekking group.
This is the first incident of the Maoists robbing foreigners since the Maoist insurgency began in 1996.
Security sources said that the rebels looted Rs 28,000 from the British and dismantled a tent. They also ordered the group to immediately vacate the place. The group was on its way to Yamphudin from Suketar.
Likewise, in another incident in Gopetar area in Panchthar, the rebels looted Rs 12,000 in cash and binoculars from a German and another Dutch trekking groups. Similarly the rebels robbed Rs 48,000 in cash from other trekkers in the Yamphudin VDC. The trekkers’ nationality could not be identified immediately. The site of the incidents where the foreigners were robbed is located about two days of walking distance from the district headquarters, Fungling.
A large number of foreigners arrive here every year for trekking and making an expedition to 8,586-m high Mt. Kanchanjangha, the third highest peak in the world, via Yamphudin. The trekking route to the Kanchanjangha region became more popular after the government six years ago declared the region as “Gift to the Earth.”Posted on: 2003-11-11 08:24
