King asked Lt Gen Shah to quit

KATHMANDU, NOV 11 - Military Secretary of the king, Lieutenant General Bibek Kumar Shah has resigned, following his differences with Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa. According to a Royal Palace source, King Gyanendra has already accepted Shah’s resignation.The source said that king had asked Shah, one of his military advisors to resign after the Prime Minister complained on Shah’s direct interference in transfer of some Deputy Inspector Generals of Police last week."Shah had recommended the name of Ashok Shrestha, a former Royal Palace ADC for the post of Kathmandu Valley DIG, which Prime Minister Thapa rejected," the source said. The source said that Thapa and his allies were known critics of Shah. Shah, who was appointed to the post of military secretary by late king Birendra, was promoted to the post of major general last April. Shah has quit the service 17 months prior to his normal retirement date.
Shah was of the view that current political turmoil could not be solved militarily and political parties’ involvement was essential.Posted on: 2003-11-10 11:25
