Fresh clashes: 15 rebels, two securitymen killed

KATHMANDU, NOV 11 - At least 15 Maoist militants and two security personnel were killed in the latest clashes in various parts of the country, according to reports. Seven security personnel were also injured in the encounters.
Security officials in Banke claimed to have killed at least 10 Maoists during the five-day-long security operation in the southeastern part of the district. Sources said a military operation was launched in Baijapur, Binauna, Kumbhar and Bhauwa villages.
In Kanchanpur district, three unidentified Maoists fell to army action last night at Bhawarbhoj of Jhalari VDC, according to district security officials. Likewise, two Maoists were shot dead in a security action in Udaypur’s Helauchha VDC where they had detonated a landmine aimed at the forces on a patrol.A report from Surkhet said that one policeman was killed and three others were wounded when a group of armed rebels opened fire on them on Campus Road early Monday. Four rebels opened fire at the policemen who were going to the campus to provide security to the students appearing for annual examinations.
The slain policeman has been identified as head constable Nar Bahadur Budha of Nepalgunj.
The three injured policemen were airlifted to Nepalgunj for treatment. However, the examination of the Bachelor level of Education continued despite the shootout.
Meanwhile, in Parsa, a soldier of the Royal Nepal Army died instantly and four others sustained serious injuries while defusing a landmine planted by rebels in the jungle of Sonbarsa VDC. The injured soldiers were airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. A military truck had hit the landmine while defusing it.
A report from Parsa said that normal life in the district came to a standstill due to the Maoist-called Parsa bandh today.
Another report from Manthali has it that rebels abducted Gyan Bahadur Chhetri, the headmaster of Siddheshwor Secondary School, and Krishna Dhungel, a former Maoist of the Chisapani VDC last Friday.Posted on: 2003-11-10 11:35
