Investigation into civilian’s killing on: Thapa

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, NOV 10 - Breaking its silence over the killing of a young businessman by an army man at Balaju on Thursday, the government today disclosed that it had taken the incident "seriously".
"The government has taken the incident seriously and it is carrying out an investigation to find out the actuality and punish the perpetrator," Kamal Thapa, Minister for Information and Communications, told journalists today at a tea party hosted by the Ganeshman Study Academy. He added, "The army man should not have shot the man in the first instance."
Agitating political parties had strongly criticised the government’s silence over the incident and labelled it as an instance of militarisation in the country. "The incident should not be linked to militarisation," Thapa told The Kathmandu Post.
An unidentified soldier shot dead businessman Rajeev Shrestha, 21, on Thursday after his car hit the bus of a military school the soldier was in. The army has already formed a four-member probe committee and has initiated investigation.
Polls ‘soon’ if political parties support the govt
Minister Thapa today said that the government would "soon" announce the dates of elections if the political parties supported the government’s move.
"The government is ready to announce local polls, provided the government receives the political parties’ support," he said, adding that the government was once again requesting the political parties for their support for the elections.
Saying that the support of political parties was necessary to hold elections, he added that the more they delayed in supporting the government, the farther the elections would be pushed.Posted on: 2003-11-09 09:51
