Firepower

NOV 10 - After reading Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa’s 15-point development agenda and following the recent developments in Nepal, an observer is forced to make pessimistic inferences. First, political “power” does not have any space in Nepali politics, rather it seems to be the military “force” that is going to decide the future of Nepal. This is a worrying sign. It looks Nepalis will have to put up with the unconstitutional government for quite a long period, no matter how vociferously it cries to shrug off the tag, unless a miracle happens. Secondly, the war between the Maoist rebels and the government seems to be more an ego war than anything else—a war that both sides do not want to win (either side would like to see the other side in a losing position). The encroachment of innocent Nepalis’ space by both sides has meant that people do not have the right to live, which is a matter of shame to those who are increasingly relying on ‘force’.
