Woman accused of witchcraft faces life threats

POST REPORT

GADHAWA, NOV 08 - Some of the locals of Gadhawa of Gaur municipality-7, in Rautahat district have been pressurising Suvagiya Devi in Gadhawa to leave her home on the allegation that she is a witch. They had severely assaulted and fed her excreta on the same charges some four months ago, as alleged by the victim.
Local residents have been mounting pressure on Devi to leave after she lodged a complaint at the District Administration Office (DAO) three months ago against seven persons who had meted out inhuman treatment on her, according to Devi.
Her own neighbours had severely beaten her up and fed excreta to her on charges of causing illness to women in the locality by practising black magic. "I lodged a complaint against the assailants after the bitter incident. Since then I have been facing threats to leave my house," lamented a sad Devi.
She also confided that the threat has intensified and that she is now facing life threats from the assailants and their associates.
"Hoping to get justice, I had lodged complaint against them (assailants) so that they would not repeat such inhumane activities again. However, the police arrested one but released him at a bail amount of Rs.10,000," lamented Devi. "This has only encouraged the assailants further."
Stating that the assailants as pointed out by the victim have been hiding in India, Yagyananda Diwedi, an Inspector of Police, said that the culprits should face strict punishment once arrested.
