Nepalgunj upsets Birgunj
KATHMANDU, NOV 08 - Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) pulled a surprise win of one wicket over upbeat Region No 2 (Birgunj) today at the TU Cricket Stadium probably ending Birgunj’s hopes of winning the inaugural Under-17 National League Cricket Tournament.
Birgunj now has a win in three matches and is yet to play Region No 4 (Bhairahawa). Nepalgunj claimed Birgunj’s all 10 wickets in exact 40 overs restricting the eastern side to 115 runs before surpassing the total in 37.2 overs with the help of Anil Thapa’s brilliant batting.
Anil scored unbeaten 46 to bring the surprise win for his team in nail-biting finish. Anil came to bat at 21/2 and saw his partners coming and returning in regular intervals.
The highest partnership of the innings was of 33 runs for 7th wicket with Shahid Riza, who hit 13. Ravindra Chand contributed 11 while none other Nepalgunj batsmen succeed to touch two-digit.
As in earlier matches, Birgunj’s spinners bowled well. Off-spinner Amrit Pokherel and Shahi Keshari picked up two each while Narayan Patel, Amit Alok, Mohamad Abrar and Suraj Timilsina claimed one each. None of Birgunj bowlers went void even though it was their opponents who had the last cheers.
Earlier, Birgunj’s Shovakant Pandey and Amrit gave a brilliant foundation adding 49 runs for opening partnership. Pandey made 23 while Amrit scored 20 before both became victims of Shahid Riza. Captain Subash Jaiswal became one of the three run-out victims after he scored 11. None other batsmen did good as Irfan Siddique and Shahid Riza took two each and Nashir Ansari, Miraj Ansari and Imran Khan took one each.
