Stress on coherent relations among S Asian neighbours
KATHMANDU, NOV 08 - A seminar on "Future of South Asia: A New Generational Perspective" concluded today with a stress on the need to build coherent relations among the South Asian neighbours.
The one-day programme, organised by the Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA) in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), was inaugurated by Nepal’s Ambassador-at-large Dr Bhekh Bahadur Thapa.
Addressing the meet, SAARC Secretary General Q A Rahim said that the new generation of South Asians have a future responsibility of leading us in the future as concepts like the South Asian Economic Union has already been envisaged.
On the occasion, Ratnakar Adhikari, Nishchal Nath Pandey, Rajendra Kumar Khetan and Paras Ghimire presented their respective papers on the topic.
Pandey, deputy executive director of IFA, expressed views that the strained relationship between India and Pakistan had been the central problem, hindering the process of globalisation and emerging trends of regional and sub-regional economic cooperation.
"South Asia witnesses massive built up of conventional arms race, frequent border skirmishes, conflict centering around ethnic, religious and sectarian lines and above all massive corruption and political instability," Pandey said, while presenting his papers.
But he observed that there had not been much of its impact on the leadership of the two prominent members of SAARC. He expressed belief that the focus would shift from state security to human security in the region as the leadership passes on to younger crop of leaders with the right attitude.Posted on: 2003-11-07 11:54
