Relatives of bank robbers in police custody

PRAKASH ADHIKARI

RATMATE, NUWAKOT, NOV 07 - Police have arrested the father of three sons, accused of being involved in a bank robbery at Bisal Bazaar, and four others, on suspicion that the accused might have given them the booty before fleeing.
A police team arrested Krishna Prasad Nepal, 80, the father of the three accused brothers - security guard of Rastriya Banijya Bank - Surya Nepal, Kalyan and Baikuntha - and four nearest relatives from their respective houses for interrogations. Four others arrested by the police have been identified as Shashi Nepal, Ram Prasad Nepal, Damodar Nepal and Bishnu Hari Nepal.
All of them were arrested yesterday when a high-level police team formed to probe into the robbery disclosed that the three brothers were involved in the sensational robbery.
The accused had made off with Rs 22 million, all in Rs 1,000 denomination bank notes, breaking into the bank vaults of Rastriya Banijya Bank last Sunday.
One of the relatives told The Kathmandu Post that two accused, Kalyan and Baikuntha, had already paid back their debt of about Rs 50,000 before they fled home soon after the radio announcement about their involvement in the robbery.
Before the news of the bank robbery came to light, villagers used to treat them as a respected family in their locality. "Now, even schoolchildren look down on them," said a villager requesting anonymity. Many villagers had expressed their surprise at finding them in lavish fashions and paying back the long-standing debts.
But the 75-year-old mother of the accused, Chhatra Kumari, was doubtful about such a huge amount of money they brought home without any known sources of income. She burned down three kilograms of sugar her sons had offered her as gift. "She is more worried about her social reputation than the future consequence of her sons-turned-perpetrators," said her relative.Posted on: 2003-11-06 08:27
