New children’s home
NOV 07 - Some days are like in a movie: 37 children between the ages of 8 months and 16 years, a little orphanage placed near the hills in Hattigauda, poverty and some smaller and bigger problems. But also a lot of laughter, happy little faces and love. This is where we have been working and living for the past 4 weeks at New Children’s Home.
We are so happy to be here—in this poor orphanage with these beautiful children. Here, each day is a new adventure and each day we learn and discover so much.
We wish with all our hearts that we could bring this orphanage a big suitcase filled with money, because so many things are really needed here—medical supplies, books, school uniforms, blankets, and so on. However, unfortunately this is not possible. Instead, we offer our love, care, support, fun and games.
Inspired by Mother Teresa, Bikram Dhungana, age 28, established the home in the year 2002. He wanted to provide “proper care and shelter to orphans, helpless children and the disabled.” With his own funding he renovated the rundown house to make it livable, installing a kitchen, toilet, water well and plastered floors. Now, just three adults run the orphanage—Dhungana (28), his wife Urmila (20) and Maya Gurgung (33)— making this a true miracle story. They work tirelessly to look after all 37 children.
The home has a remarkably friendly and loving atmosphere and we are so thankful and also proud to have the opportunity to work in such a warm and caring place. Some good-hearted people drop by from time to time, bringing some packaged foods or some used clothes for the children. However, this is not enough. The orphanage needs much more help. Being students, we are unable to help out financially, yet we can offer a smile and a warm hug. We can hold the children’s hands, encourage them, give them some hope. We can help them with their homework, teach them some English, educate them about manners, hygiene, and pollution and play with them.
Sometimes, after daal bhat it is so fulfilling to stand at the well, taking out water and washing the children’s dirty dishes. Something as simple as helping to wash brings us such a good feeling, and makes us so remarkably happy. It is simple moments like these that we will always remember, and the memories of the children will remain forever in our hearts.Posted on: 2003-11-06 08:57
