Food aid superior to cash donation
KATHMANDU, NOV 07 - Experts today stressed that food aid is far superior and effective than cash donation for the development of those countries, which are vulnerable to food insecurity.
Speaking at a programme, organised by the World Food Programme (WFP) entitled "Food Aid and Policy", on Thursday, various speakers stated that food aid has comparative advantage against the other aid as it reaches directly to the target group.
"Several studies have revealed that food aid is the best option to those food-deficit countries where inflation rate tends to fly high," said they.
Presenting a working paper, Judit Katona-Apte, Programme Advisor at the WFP’s regional office based in Bangkok, said that WFP has amended its aid policy from time to time so that it can serve the large number of starving people with its limited resources.Basanta Raj Gautam, Programme Manager of the Rural Community Infrastructure Work, made presentation on "Food for Work" (FfW) programme being carried in various districts further claiming that FfW has now become synonymous to development in many parts of the country.
"The FfW programme sure has brought prosperity in outlying areas. But lack of effective co-ordination between the line agencies of the government has obstruct the ultimate goal of bringing social change," he added.
Dr Shankar Sharma, Vice-chairman of the National Planning Commission (NPC) also shared his views on the occasion.Posted on: 2003-11-06 09:11
