Flights to Meghauli inoperative

POST REPORT

NARAYANGADH, NOV 06 - Meghauli airstrip, servicing the Royal Chitwan National Park (RCNP) in Chitwan district, has been closed for the past week due to security concerns. This has had an adverse impact on the tourism sector, especially when tourist activities were picking up, observed sources. Flights to the airstrip were cancelled as the two nearby police posts were transferred to Bharatpur, the district headquarters, due to increasing Maoist activities.
Located some 27 kilometres from Bharatpur, the airstrip handles 10 flights a day during normal operations, according to Keshab Lamshal, the Chief at the airstrip. “The airstrip is non-functional following the Civil Aviation Authority (CIA) order that no flights be resumed unless security is guaranteed,” said Lamshal.
