ITAHARI, NOV 06 - A public discussion programme was organised at Chimdi Village Development Committee (VDC), Sunsari district, recently regarding formulating a master plan for the preservation of the historic Barju lake located in the village. The lake is also rich in terms of biodiversity.
The discussions programme was jointly organised by the pro public and the public property development and preservation committee (Barjutal) with financial assistance of the Ford foundation. The objective of the programme was to solicit suggestions from the locals and experts as to what measures need to be adopted regarding the preservation of the ancient lake, its rich biodiversity and developing the lake area into a centre of tourism. Out of 147 bigha area of public land, 47 bigha is covered by land and wetland. The lake and the wetland region surrounding it are home to various species of fishes and birds. The lake is also important from the religious point of view also, according to the villagers.
An amount of Rs 5 million would be spend in the first phase development works to be undertaken as per the master plan for the development of Burjutal area. the amount would be spent in protecting the encroached land, conducting the baseline survey, conservation of the lake, construction of a temple, a park, a tourist information centre, museum, playground, guest house and other associated structures.

Biodiversity expert Dr. Ram Prasad Chaudhari, wetlands expert Achyut Adhikari, environmentalist Bhawani Prasad Pokharel and planning experts expressed their views on different aspects of development of the lake area.
