Penury forces 4 of family to end life

BIRGUNJ, NOV 06 - In a tragic incident, four members of a family committed suicide in their home at Nagawa Tol of the Birgunj Sub-Metropolis on Tuesday night.
Police officials investigating into the incident suspect that the Chaurasiya family committed suicide due to financial crisis caused by a long-drawn-out legal battle over tenancy right.
The police have identified the deceased as Sitadevi Barai Chaurasiya, 65, her son Paramananda, 38, daughter-in-law Urmila Devi, 35, and granddaughter Satya, 17.
Police officer Birendra Kumar Sharma told The Kathmandu Post that mother Sitadevi was found dead after having consumed an overdose of Metacide poison while the three others ended their lives by hanging on ceiling fans.
Paramananda’s two sons, aged five and 12 years, were away at their maternal uncle’s home in India on Tuesday and another seven-year-old daughter Poonam was sleeping at the time of the suicides.
Neighbours said that they came to know about the tragic deaths only this morning when they went to their home to wake them up for taking a dip in Nagawa pond nearby on the occasion of kartik ekadashi (fasting).
"To our shock, we found them already dead when we went to their home to wake them up for the bath at about four in the morning," said Sikliya Devi, a neighbour.
Locals said that Paramananda had been fighting a protracted legal battle with his landlord Gopal Chaurasiya over the tenancy right for the last eight years. Laxman Chaurasiya, one of the relatives of the deceased family, said the tenant-family was heavily in debt considering their status and this could have led them to take such an extreme step.
Locals said that Paramananda had borrowed of Rs 10,000 from lender Satya Narayan Sah Turaha after mortgaging his house for Rs 30,000 to fund the legal battle over tenancy right for 16 katthas of land about three years ago.
Paramananda had already became mentally unstable when the lender last week filed a court case demanding a freeze on the transaction of his mortgaged house.
At the same time, he had also received a proposal for his daughter Satya’s marriage but he was not in a position to solemnise it.Posted on: 2003-11-05 08:46
