Regional power grid ‘essential’

POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, NOV 05 - Secretary general of the World Energy Council (WEC) Gerald Doucet said that a regional power grid is essential for Nepal if it is to reap rich rewards from its vast hydropower potential.
Addressing a press meet today, Doucet, who is currently on a visit here, said that Nepal can benefit exporting energy to India from hydropower projects irrespective of their size.
"Much will depend on Nepal’s ability to attract private sector investment in this field," he said, urging the need for more clarity in the government’s policy on hydropower.
Indicating to the global energy market trend, with significant hike in the price of fossil fuel and gas over the years, he said that Nepal could benefit from hydropower projects irrespective of their size.
"As the price of fossil fuel continues to rise, it makes the growth in demand for renewable energy like electricity imminent," said the secretary general of the London-based global organisation. Established in 1923, it entertains a broad range of energy issues, including energy scenarios, market structures, environment and energy poverty. It has over 90 member countries including Nepal.Posted on: 2003-11-04 09:03
