Locals concerned over pollution in Trisuli river

RSS

NUWAKOT, NOV 05 - The Trisuli river, originated from the sacred Hindu pilgrimage of Gosaikunda is suffering from human encroachment and pollution.
The river here has become polluted after the sewage and solid waste produced by the dense population in Trisuli Bazaar is directed into the river.
Around 500 houses in Dhunge and Trisuli Bazaar have their toilet waste flowing directly into the river through the medium of the sewage pipe instead of storing it in a safety tank.
Local residents here have pointed out the need for the local responsible body, the Bidur Municipality to look into the affair and necessary measure on sewage and solid waste management.
Likewise, irregular extraction of sand and stones from the river is also having an adverse effect on the river.
The river has been facing human encroachment after its water current subsided as a result of the Trisuli Hydel Centre in Tupche VDC that is using the river’s water to generate electricity. This trend has put a question mark on the significance of the river, says local intellectual, Ramhari Rimal.
However, newly appointed Deputy Mayor of Bidur Municipality, Kul Bahadur Khadgi, said the municipality does not have any programme immediately on checking pollution into the Trisuli river but is working to develop a dumping site.
It’s been a very long tradition here to dump wastes into the river and the municipality does have any budget for its long-term solution. "Nevertheless, we have been thinking of urging the Local Development Ministry for necessary cooperation in mobilising non-government organisations to run public awareness programme on it", adds Khadgi.Posted on: 2003-11-04 09:22
