NC, UML looking for alternative
- joint resolution on prez move
KATHMANDU, NOV 19 - Consensus to end the parliamentary deadlock by addressing the demands of the main opposition eluded the three major parties yet again on Thursday.
A meeting of the three-member task force ended inconclusively. The task-force was formed on Wednesday to finalise a joint resolution motion to be tabled at the parliament.
Taskforce members said they will be meeting on Friday to find a way out.
Later, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal held a meeting with senior lea-ders of CPN-UML and Nepali Congress to discuss alternative measures so that the House would not have to deal with a joint resolution motion aimed at addressing the Maoist demand for correction of the president’s “unconstitutional move”. The ruling coalition may resort to drawing the attention of the House or a motion of urgent public importance if UCPN (Maoist) continues to disagree with the contents of the joint resolution motion, UML Chief Whip Bhim Acharya told the Post. Unlike the resolution motion, neither of these motions need to be passed by the House and speaking for or against the motion during the debate is enough.
UML and Congress leaders who attended the meeting with the prime minister said one of these motions would come up only as a last option.
Meanwhile, Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party (TMLP) has reiterated that the budget should be endorsed through political consensus in a meeting with Maoist leaders.
Maoist vice chairmen Baburam Bhattarai and Narayan Kaji Shrestha reached TMLP parliamentary party office and urged its leadership to play a ‘neutral’ and effective role in defusing the ongoing political deadlock.
“We opined that the party is not in favor of seeking an alternative to the House for budget endorsement,” said TMLP leader Hridayesh Tripathi. The Maoists have also realised that there is no alternative to discussion and consensus and they believe in
finding a ‘middle path’ solution to the prevailing crisis.
TMLP Chairman Mahantha Thakur and party spokesperson Sarbendra Nath Sukla were also pre-sent at the meeting with Maoist leaders.
