Raj Shrestha spurs Kathmandu to victory
KATHMANDU, NOV 05 - Leading from the front, captain Raj Shrestha inspired Region No 3 (Kathmandu) to a 37-run victory over Region No 2 (Birgunj) in the inaugural match of the first-ever Under-17 National League Cricket Tournament at the TU Cricket Ground today.
Shrestha took four wickets as Birgunj were left 37 run short at 130/9 after the completion of allotted overs. Earlier, Munik Shreshta played a splendid innings to score 80 runs off 71 balls with 12 fours to took Kathmandu to 167 all out in 36 overs.
Munik dominated the proceedings after his team chose to bat with clean and skillful hits. Although he was dropped for a couple of time, he played a spectacular innings adding 72 runs for opening partnership with Sujan Maharjan (25) and 43 with Suresh Dahal (7) for the third.
But once Munik was out in the 25th over off left-arm spinner Narayan Patel caught by Bhushan Yadav, the rest of Kathmandu batsmen failed to carry on. Raj Shrestha scored 18 and Paras 11 while other failed against Patel.
Bowling brilliantly, Patel claimed five wickets giving away just 20 runs in eight overs. Suraj Timilsina took three more while the last two batsmen ran themselves out.
Birgunj’s reply was never impressive. Their batsmen stayed, but failed to score off the Kathmandu bowling. Kathmandu gave away 44 extra runs including 30 wides. Sashi Keshari topscored with 22 while left-arm pace bowler Deepak Shreshta scored 19 despite being injured while bowling.
Earlier, president of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) Jai Kumar Nath Shah inaugurated the tournament. On Wednesday, Region No 3 (Kathmandu) will take on Region
