Golf remains integral part of tourism

POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, NOV 05 - Golf and tourism are interrelated with each other as many hotels construct golf course in their attempt to allure
tourists.
In Nepalese context, despite having great potentials for the attraction of tourists, golf courses are confined to limited areas. Players in the likes of Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh came in limelight through golf and popularised their country as well. Lack of professionalism in golf has put tourism entrepreneurs at back foot in Nepal.
Standard golf competitions begun in Nepal from 1993 when Surya Nepal introduced Surya Nepal Masters bringing professional golfers from India. Though there are almost two thousand golfers in Nepal, only 20 are professionals till date. Lack of tournaments forced them to stay idle. Professional golfers like Deepak Acharya, Radheshyam Thapa, Deepak Thapa, Toran Shahi and Ramesh Nagarkoti are giving their best to serve Nepali golf despite lack of facilities.
Deepak Acharya: Acharya started playing golf when he was five. He was inspired by his golfer father Shambhu Acharya and turned pro in 1998. He has participated in more than 30 professional competitions. Acharya is instructing school children and other amateur golfers at the Gokarna Golf Club.
Radheshyam Thapa: At the age of three Thapa held a club and being a member of a golf family he learnt golf when he was in Germany with his golf instructor father Ghanshyam Thapa. Thapa participated at the Indian tour from 1996 to 1999 after becoming a professional golfer in 1996. His best-ever performance was recorded in 1996 when he clinched the third spot at the Surya Nepal Masters.Posted on: 2003-11-04 09:43
