KATHMANDU, NOV 05 - There is a need to impart peace education to the children from the school level to see an end to violence in the country, was the view expressed at two separate programmes held in the capital to mark the 57th UNESCO day today.
Bidaya Dhar Mallik, Secretary, Ministry of Education said peace education through formal and education informal and extra-curricular activities was the need of the day. "This will see an aesthetic transformation in the students’ character, behaviour and lifestyle," Mallik said.
UNESCO representative to Nepal, Sotokano, informed that peace education would be implemented in the schools in the near future.
Former ambassador to UNESCO, Keshav Jha, urged all people to work towards restoring peace in the country. "The culture of violence is fast increasing. Thus the liability to instil the culture of peace falls on all of us."
Similarly, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Daman Nath Dhungana stressed on the need to solve
the present crisis of the country through dialogue. He also urged all political parties to leave educational institutions out of politics.
Ramesh Prasad Gautam, president of the UNESCO-affiliated School Support Council, said imparting peace education to the children meant investing for a violence-free tomorrow.Posted on: 2003-11-04 09:15
