Entrepreneurs against closure of cabin restaurants

POST REPORT
KATHMANDU, NOV 05 - Restaurant Entrepreneurs’ Association (REA) today warned the government that it would initiate serious protest programmes if the government goes ahead with its decision to close down cabin restaurants.
Submitting a memorandum to the Chief District Officer, Baman Prasad Neupane, at the district administration office here, REA informed media about the possible movement.
The REA memorandum was against the government’s decision to close down all cabin restaurants. The decision came last week after the Committee’s discussion meeting at Maiti Nepal on the report prepared by the committee. The report, prepared after visits to 52 different restaurants had raised different issues related to abuse and exploitation inside cabin restaurants.
Talking to The Kathmandu Post Neupane said that there was no government policy regarding cabin restaurants. He informed that the government’s decision was against those who were not following government policy and was not intended to hamper restaurant business.
"Government is not interested to close down business but the decision is to make restaurants systematic and morally correct," said Neupane.
REA in its Memorandum says, it already has plans to change the general perspective towards dance and cabin restaurants. It also informs that more than 30,000 people were employed in the restaurant business; and if these were closed 80 percent would become unemployed due to illiteracy and among them 70 percent would be women.
Meanwhile, Kumar Shrestha, secretary of REA said that instead of small cabins they would just make partitions inside the restaurant.
