‘Ban Gadhimai killings’
KATHMANDU, NOV 17 - Protestors have demanded prompt government action to stop the ritual slaughter of animals at the Gadhimai Mela in Bara.
Speaking at a press conference organised by the Nepal Tamang National Federation (NTNF) on Tuesday, human rights activist Sudip Pathak said that the government should take necessary steps to stop the sacrifices immediately. “Creating referendum is necessary regarding this issue. It is equally important to issue a law to prevent these sacrifices from happening again in the future,” Pathak said.
Speaking at the programme, film director and producer Yubraj Lama stressed on the need to generate awareness among the general public to stop animal sacrifices in any religious occasion. On a similar note, President of the NTNF D.B Bomjan said, “The abolishment of such practices has to be stated explicitly in the constitution”
NTNF, along with other concerned authorities, will be organising a motorcycle rally starting from the Bhadrakali Temple on Nov. 18 as part of the campaign. A lakhbatti(100,000 lamps) programme has also been scheduled at Boudhanath stupa for Nov. 20.
