US Embassy confirms Maoists declared national threat

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, NOV 02 - The Unites States government today confirmed the media reports that it has declared the CPN-Maoist a national threat to USA and has imposed sanctions on financial and other dealings with the organisation.
The US Embassy in Kathmandu today said that Secretary of State Colin Powell today designated the CPN-Maoist under Executive Order 13224 on terrorism financing, which blocks the assets of the Maoists in USA or held by US citizens whenever located and bars most transactions or dealings with the organisation.
In a press release issued here today, the Embassy stated that the sanctions were imposed on the Maoists for their acts of terrorism committed during the past eight years and threatening the stability of a government friendly to the US.
Attacks on the development infrastructures, government offices and intimidating the villagers through extortion and torture have been cited as the other reasons behind taking such an action against the Maoists.
"This organisation poses a terrorist threat to the security of US nationals and US national security and foreign policy interests," the release further stated. The release also said that members of the Maoists were responsible for the murder of two Nepali security personnel working for the US Embassy. "They have publicly threatened US diplomats in Kathmandu last year," it added.
The extortion unleashed on US-owned business concerns by the Maoists, robbing of American tourists, burning of the establishments frequented by foreign tourists and terrorising the US-sponsored NGOs working in Nepal have been cited as other reasons behind the stringent action.
The Embassy has once again warned its citizens to differ non-essential travel and maintain a low profile during their stay in Nepal stay.Posted on: 2003-11-01 08:51
