SURKHET, NOV 02 - Following the decision of the Rastriya Banijaya Bank (RBB) Birendranagar branch to stop exchanging Indian currency, business transactions in Birendranagar, the regional headquarters of the Mid-western Region, have been adversely affected.
Earlier, the bank had decided not to exchange the Indian currency, citing the fragile security situation and lack of insurance fund.
Referring to the recent decision of the bank, the local businessmen at a press conference organised here yesterday by Surkhet Chambers of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) said that the decision of the bank might eventually lead to the appreciation of the Indian currency at the local level.
"So, the concerned sector should pay attention toward such problem," demanded the businessmen during the conference.
As the main occupation of the locals here is to go to India to earn a living and 75 percent of the business transaction used to be done through Indian currency in the district.
The local businessmen have strongly demanded with the bank that it resumed the exchange of the Indian currency for the benefits of the locals as soon as possible.
"Now, as a result of the decision of the bank, as much as IRs 20 million has been remained idle in the city," said Tek Bahadur Bhandari, president of the SCCI.
The businessmen have been unable to go to Nepalgunj merely for exchanging the Indian currency because of the deteriorating security situation of the country.
The press release issued by the SCCI also stated that the bank would be responsible for any inconvenience caused to the locals because of its such decision.Posted on: 2003-11-01 09:49
