GHORAHI,DANG, OCT 30 - An unspecified disease has killed three members of a family living in Dhanbas in Purandhara VDC-4, and affected four other members of the same family, who have begun to show similar symptoms as their deceased members.
The three dead were the sons of Umay Dangi. The incident took place during the Tihar festival. On the first day of the five-day long festival, Dangi’s four year-old son complained of a burning pain in the stomach, followed by vomiting of blood which ultimately caused his death. Similarly, his nine year-old son too died yesterday after showing similar symptoms. Then his two year-old son died just today morning after being gripped by the same unknown disease.
It is learnt that of the remaining nine members of the Dangi family, four other members also appear have been showing the same symptoms of the deadly menace. According to Bikash Devkota, a doctor at the Mahendra Hospital in Ghorahi, the deaths could have occurred due to food poisoning. However, the exact nature and type of this disease is yet to be ascertained.
Meanwhile, another health report from Kapilvastu states that three more deaths have taken place due to the intensity of diarrhoea which has been affecting the two VDCs of Jayanagar and Buddi, for the past two weeks.
The dead have been identified as, Tolaki Bhusal a resident of Jayanagar VDC-9, and Gopal Sunar and Batuli Sunar of Buddi VDC-2.
After more and more people began to suffer from diarrhoea, a two-day health camp was organised in the premises of Badhara Primary School and a sub-health post at Jayanagar VDC to control further casualties to the malady. According to Ramkrishna Panthi the Auxiliary Health Worker of this health post, all the patients who came to the camp were provided medicines and other medical help free of cost. 90 diarrhoea patients had been treated at this camp. The menace has however come under control in these two VDCs, informed Panthi.
According to the health workers there, people of these VDCs had fallen victim to diarrhoea due to the consumption of diseased fish found in the waters of the Ghorai River which had been polluted due to mixing of poisonous substances. It is learnt that these VDCs are under health surveillance at the moment.Posted on: 2003-10-29 09:07
