Maintain meat quality: DLO Palpa

POST REPORT

PALPA, OCT 29 - District Livestock Office (DLO), Palpa has recently asked the meat sellers of Tansen, the district headquarters, to maintain hygiene of meat. The DLO, Palpa has also warned the meat sellers of taking strong legal action if they defied the order.
The DLO’s warning has come at a time when the meat sellers continued selling unhygienic meat despite their commitment to sell hygienic meat on 15th October this year.
The 28-point hygienic guidelines committed by the butchers and recognized by the DLO, however, was implemented very briefly.
According to our local correspondent, the civil society, among others, has been pressurising the local bodies to implement the guidelines.
The civil society has been cautious enough to the quality of meat as they could not get hygienic meat even during Tihar, the second greatest festival of Nepali. Breaching their own commitments, the butchers continued selling unhygienic meat.
Despite the efforts of the government and the civil society, the consumers expressed disappointment whether the butchers’ mal practice would end. Talking to The Kathmandu Post, Prem Ghimire, a local consumer, said, "We are compelled to consume unhygienic meat despite knowing that it is detrimental to our health"
However, Dr. Tirtha Raj Regmi, chief of DLO, Palpa seems hopeful of the proper implementation of the guideline set earlier. "We are going to take strict steps to ensure the quality of meat."
Currently there are 32 meat sellers in Tansen. However, only two or three shops have maintained the quality of meat.Posted on: 2003-10-28 09:20
