Primary students show distaste for Haluwa

POST REPORT

HETAUDA, OCT 26 - Primary school students in Makwanpur district have stopped taking haluwa or the day meal due to the cooking materials being of poor quality, according to sources.
WFP has been providing haluwa to the primary students in the district since last year with an aim of attracting more children to school. However, due to the poor quality of flour and ghee used for preparing haluwa, the students in all schools have stopped taking haluwa, according to sources.
Until June/July the quality of haluwa was good and students relished it. However, for the past two months the quality of haluwa has deteriorated to such a state that students hate it, according to Kabiraj Tiwari, the Headmaster of the proposed Pashupati Lower Secondary School in Masine of Hadikhola VDC-7.
"Since the haluwa is of poor quality, students litter the school ground with it," said another teacher of the school.
Earlier, the flour would be imported from America and the Ghee came from Nepal Banashpati Ghee Industries. However, in the past two months, flour came from India and even the industry supplying ghee in Nepal was also changed. As a result, the quality of haluwa deteriorated, according to Nepal representative of the WFP.Posted on: 2003-10-25 10:56
