Zoo is not a dumping site, says Director

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, OCT 23 - Birds and animals confiscated from illegal traders on Friday and handed over to the Central Zoo, Jawalakhel, still await for their destiny as decision regarding their refuge has not been made yet. A meeting was supposed to be organised by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC) on Monday but there has been no contact from them till today, informed R.K. Shrestha, Director of Central Zoo, Jawalakhel.
"Central Zoo has its own limitations both in terms of space and management, and we cannot keep on storing animals that are already represented here in adequate number. The Zoo is not a dumping site", fumed Shrestha.
Mohan Wagle, spokesman at the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation said that the birds and animals were kept in the zoo for a short period. "Since the feathers of the birds have been cut we have asked the zoo authority to keep them till their feathers grow, we will later release the birds at Bird Orphanage Godavari and the animals at Shivapuri National Park" said Wagle.
Meanwhile, Shrestha urged the concerned authorities to take decisions at the earliest and make new long-term policy regarding such issues so that problems like this could be readily solved in the future.Posted on: 2003-10-22 11:10
