Kathmandu-Birgunj rail link demanded
HETAUDA, OCT 21 - Experts gathered at an interaction programme organised here today have asked the government to conduct a survey to assess the possibility of constructing an electric railway link between Kathmandu and Birgunj.
"Electric railway would be very economical," claimed Engineer Birendra Keshari Pokharel, speaking at the programme that was organised by Birgunj Sub-Metropolitan City. He said that the passenger fare would be half the fares on the road.
The construction cost of the 135 kilometre long electric railway link between Kathmandu and Birgunj would be Rs 13 billion, said Pokharel, adding that most of railway path would follow through the corridor of the Bagmati river.
A 12 kilometre long subway should be constructed in between the route. As per the calculations based on the average speed of 80 kilometres per hour, it will take one hour and 41 minutes to travel from Birgunj to Kathmandu.
Badri Khatiwada of Purvadar Nepal said that the survey could be completed within two months at the cost of Rs 25 million. "The government is currently analysing the possibility of constructing alternative highways to join the Terai region with Kathmandu, and, therefore, this possibility to needs consideration," he said.Posted on: 2003-10-21 12:05
