Decline in demand for bamboo, reeds furniture
BIRATNAGAR, OCT 20 - There is the demand of about Rs. 250 million of bamboo and reeds furniture in the country every year. There is the scarcity of bamboo and reeds in the country and a large amount is spent every year to buy such products from foreign countries, according to persons involved in bamboo and reeds industry.
The use of bamboo and reeds furniture has decreased every year due to import of such goods from foreign countries and the industry is deteriorating every year. One of the main reasons of its deteriorating demand is the use of plastic furniture and the scarcity of bamboo and reeds in the country, it is stated. The plastic products are attractive and cheap and the people of low income are attracted to such products. Raw materials needed for bamboo and reeds products are imported from India and now India has imposed restrictions to export such raw materials to Nepal.
Such materials are smuggled into Nepal paying high price and the production cost goes up, they said. These are very reliable and the products can last from 15 to 20 years, therefore it is very useful, the entrepreneurs involved in the industry said. There is the use of bamboo and reeds of about Rs. 25 million every year, therefore, the government should take initiative for the development of this industry, manager of Bina Reeds Wood Industry of Biratnagar said.
It can be planted in the banks of Koshi River and can be used after three years and help control the embankment, Gopal Raj Joshi of Koshi Reeds Furniture Industry said. There is the need to pay attention to promote bamboo and reeds industry in the country, they said.Posted on: 2003-10-19 10:41
