Bring Kapilvastu incident guilty to justice: OHCHR to govt
KANTIPUR REPORT
KATHMANDU, SEP 18 - The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal (OHCHR Nepal) has urged the government to take immediate steps to bring to justice the perpetrators of the Kapilvastu killings.
The Kapilvastu carnage, which erupted after the murder of landowner Mohid Khan in September 2007, had left 14 people dead and several thousand displaced.
In its statement on Wednesday, the OHCHR Nepal expressed disappointment over police’s inability to properly investigate the crimes committed during the outbreak of violence.
“With support from human rights defenders, the Kapilvastu community and neighbouring communities have taken responsibility to improve communal understanding and harmony.
Two years after the incident, it is beyond time for the government to match that effort by taking genuine steps to hold the perpetrators of the violence accountable,” said Richard Bennett, OHCHR Representative of Nepal.
