Khotang folks rue poor maternity service

Pregnant women in the district have been facing difficulties as the only hospital in district headquarters Diktel does not have equipment required for maternity service.

On Friday, Bishnu Shrestha (Karki), 26, of Chhitapokhari VDC-6, who was admitted to Khotang District Hospital for two days ago, was airlifted to Kathmandu after the hospital said it lacks equipment to conduct her delivery.

Bishnu’s family chartered a helicopter spending Rs 130,000 to take her to the Maternity Hospital at Thapathali in the Capital.

Bishnu’s husband Baburam Karki said he was forced airlift his wife to Kathmandu after health workers in the district hospital told him that the baby in her womb might have died and they cannot take risk to carry out an operation.

Nine months ago, Hasta Basnet of Sapteshwor Chhitapokhari VDC-4 was

also airlifted to Kathmandu following pregnancy-related complications. She gave birth to a baby at a Kathmandu-based hospital through surgery.

Local people say they have been hit hard as the district lacks proper health facilities and has very poor road transportation. There are three airports in the district but flights are irregular.

“The government is apathetic towards improving health service here,” said Surya Bahadur Rai, a local resident.
