Pak expose Nepal’s weaknesses

KATHMANDU, FEB 10 -

Nepal’s build up to the AFC Challenge Cup went from bad to worse after they conceded the second match to Pakistan 1-0 at the Dashrath stadium on Saturday. With the win Pakistan clean swept the two match friendly series 2-0.

Muhammed Mujahid’s goal in the 65th minute sealed the match in favour of Pakistan. Substitute Mujahid who had come off the bench three minutes ago, utilised a blunder from the Nepali defenders ruining Nepal skipper’s landmark day, in which he won 50th international cap.

Hassan Bashir had fed Mujahid the pass which he shot into the net after beating two defenders and slotting the ball past Kiran Chemjong.

Coach Jack Stefanowski continued his experiment with the players but to no avail.

In fact his side, who despite impressive performance had gone down in the first match with the same scoreline, were a

shadow of their former self in the second match with solid defense turning shaky and the strikers still their toothless self.

Thapa later admitted that his side need a lot of improvement. “We had played for a win but unfortunately we could not,” the skipper said. Unlike the first match, Pakistan dominated through out the match and Nepal failed to take the momentum away from the visitors. Pakistan made a total of 12 goal attempts compared to Nepal’s two.

After the loss coach Stefanowski urged everyone to be patient with the results. “We are a team in progress we have had just two weeks to build our team and we are still looking for the right combination,” Stefanowski said, “We need more trainings and matches to blend as a team. We need to create more chances.”

He also added he still had high hopes for Nepal in the AFC Challenge Cup Group D qualifiers to be played from March 2-6.

Pakistan’s coach Zavisa Mildzovic said his team had improved from the first match. “We did better today (Saturday) and the boys executed the plans very well,” Mildzovic said, “We had control over the match

with better ball position.”

Nepal who are pooled with Palestine, Bangladesh and Mariana Island in the group need some more firepower if they are to win the qualifiers, to be played at the same venue.
