YCL attack journos at PM's programme
KAVRE , JAN 29 - Cadres of UCPN (Maoist)-aligned youth front, Young Communist League (YCL), attacked over half a dozen journalists at a programme to be attended by Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai in Banepa on Tuesday.
Top brass leaders of UCPN (Maoist) including Chairman Puspa Kamal Dahal and Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai were scheduled to attended the UCPN (Maoist).
The YCL cadres attacked the journalists who went for news coverage of UCPN (Maoist) convention in Banepa. YCL threatened to 'finish off' Kantipur district correspondent Manoj Basnet. "Kantipur is on a mission to eliminate the UCPN (Maoist). We will not spare them and finish them off," YCL cadres vented their ire.
Journalist Bhola Thapa, of state-owned Nepal Television, and Moti Ram Timilsena, of Sourya Daily, sustained injuries in the attack.
Ram Krishna Chapagain, of Nepal Samacharpatra, was harassed by YCL cadres while entering the assembly venue. Prakash Sundas, of Namo Buddha FM, Krishna Chandra Banjara, of Kavre Hotline, were also harrased. YCL cadres had barred journalists from entering the programme venue.
Earlier in the day, the YCL cadres clashed with the cadres of opposition parties--Nepali Congress and CPN-UML--at Tin Dobato of Banepa.
The clash ensued after YCL cadres hurled stones to the NC and UML cadres who were planning to show black flag to Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai along the Arniko Highway. PM Bhattarai had reached Banepa to take party in the second district assembly of the party at Banepa Bus Park. PM
Bhattarai, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Puspa Kamal Dahal and Vice Chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha had reached the venue amid tight security after the clash.
Police had to use force to disperse the opposition cadres to take the situation under control.
