PARSA, JAN 29 - Two factions of UCPN (Maoist) clashed following a row over appointment of party representatives during the district convention in Parsa district on Tuesday.
The second district convention of the party in Birgunj was disrupted after a group led by former lawmaker Ismal Hawari shouted slogans and threw chairs at the convention hall expressing dissatisfaction over the appointment.
Police had to intervene to prevent the situation from turning worse.
Hawari accused the Chettra Bahadur Shrestha-led faction of appointing the members close to him as representatives and monitors for the upcoming party general convention.
Shrestha, also the District Secretary and Coordinator of the convention, politburo member Anjana Bisankhe, Bala Ram Shah, Prabhu Shah, among other leaders, were escorted to a safer place by police.
Despite the dissatisfaction, Secretary Shrestha said the convention had elected 31 members as the representatives and supervisors of the party. He said that the problem aroused after a small number of members were to be selected from a total of 700. "The convention has formally concluded. This is the final decision of the party," he said.
