Fire engulfs Bhutanese refugee camp
110 huts burnt to cinder
JHAPA, JAN 29 - A fire that broke out in a Bhutanese refugee camp in Beldangi-1, Jhapa, on Tuesday afternoon destroyed 110 huts, leaving its occupants homeless.
Police said the fire started from a hut at Sector 'B' in the camp and soon caught other huts. As many as 40 structures were demolished to stop the inferno from spreading further.
Two fire trucks from Bhadrapur and Itahari arrived at the scene nearly two hours later to contain the inferno. Chief District Officer Narendra Raj Sharma said the families displaced by the fire have been temporarily housed in local schools.
The World Food Programme, meanwhile, has pledged two days of ration to the victims.
