Maoist boss Dahal ‘has little hope for unity Cabinet deal’
KATHMANDU, JAN 08 -
UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal seems to have lost hope for consensus among the
parties on forming a unity government and holding elections in April-May.
Leaders close to Dahal said that the chairman was beleaguered since his
failure to ink a touted package deal with
the opposition parties. Dahal, who held regular parleys with
opposition parties earlier, has not held
any consultations in recent days.
According to leaders, Dahal has concluded that forces are working to sabotage reconciliation among the parties. “Parties are willing and ready to forge consensus but some forces are actively trying to sabotage consensus,” a leader quoted Dahal as having said.
After the several rounds of dialogue among the political parties failed to yield results, Dahal is now busy preparing a political document to present at the party’s general convention, scheduled to begin on February 2. An inter-party agreement before the convention appears unlikely.
After opposition parties turned down the ruling Maoist party’s latest proposal to form a neutral government headed by an independent candidate to secure elections in April-May, consensus has remained more elusive than ever.
“There is no possibility of an agreement among the parties in the near future as they are not ready to budge from their respective positions,” said Maoist leader Haribol Gajurel. He stated that parties were gradually losing hope for consensus to hold elections by the scheduled date.
The Maoist party had proposed a neutral government stating that elections need to be held in April-May at any cost, even if consensus cannot be had on a party-led government.
President Ram Baran Yadav’s deadline is set to expire on Wednesday but there have not been any cross-party negotiations. The opposition parties,
the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML, are holding bilateral talks on a regular basis,
reiterating their stance that
they will not accept a neutral government.
