Local pros Mani Rai and Deo Raj Pakhrin shared the lead after the first round of the Surya Nepal Eastern Open at the Par-70 Nirvana Country Club on Tuesday.
The Dharan pros opened the
seventh event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2012-13 with matching even-par 70. They are one-stroke ahead of Purna Sharma and Umesh Nagarkoti. Purna and Umesh played the rounds of
Ramesh Nagarkoti, Sabin Sapkota, Surya Prasad Sharma, Suman Rai and Rabi Khadka are tied on fifth position with the matching scores of two-over 72. Defending champion Shiva Ram Shrestha shared the 10th position along with Dhana Thapa and Jaya Ram Shrestha at three-over 73.
Likewise, Sanjay Lama, Yelamber Singh Adhikari, Ramesh Adhikari and CB Bhnadari are tied on 13th position with the score of four-over 74.
Deepak Thapa Magar, Pashupati Sharma and Ram Thapa shared the 17th position at 75. In amateur section, Nepal No 1 Bikash Bogati carded
two-over 72 to take one-stroke lead over Dinesh Prajapati and Tirtha Poudel. Dinesh and Tirtha shot 73. Sukra Rai and Bishnu Sharma are tied on fourth at 74.
In the main event, joint leader Mani played even-par 35 on both the halves with the help of four birdies and four bogeys. He carded birdies on the sixth, seventh, 13th and 15th holes, while he suffered bogeys on the second, eighth, 11th and 18th holes.
Deoraj carded one-under 34 that included birdies on the sixth and ninth holes against a bogey on the first hole. On the back nine, Deoraj shot bogeys on the 13th and 17th after hitting a birdie on the 12th hole.
A total of 57 golfers 32 pros and 25 amateurs are taking part in the tournament organized by Nepal Professional Golfers Association under the sponsorship of Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd. Cut will be applied after the second round with top 21 pros and amateurs making the cut for the final two rounds. The total cash purse of the tournament is Rs 467,500. The top three pros will receive Rs 88,000, Rs 55,000 and Rs 40,000 respectively.
