College students, most often comprising the audience at concerts, yearn nevertheless to be on stage, performing to a lively audience. The ninth installment of Kathmandu College of Management’s Inter-College Music Competition (ICMC), whose finale was held on December 22, was just such an opportunity for many a would-be musician.
The music competition has earned quite a reputation for introducing some of the finest metal bands to audiences and is a much awaited event for all music lovers. The preliminary rounds held on December 7-8 at Bhrikutimandap featured a total of 24 bands from 20 different colleges. Although in previous years, participation was largely Kathmandu-centric, it has been able to market itself beyond the Valley, and much to everyone’s delight, this year’s edition included bands from Pokhara and Bhairahawa as well. Even though most musicians were primarily representing their colleges, many of them perform at regular gigs in their hometowns.
The final round of the concert held at Bhrikutimandap on December 22 included 10 bands as finalists selected from the preliminary shows. Points awarded by the judges’ panel accounted for the final results. Imperium-Apex College, runner-up of the eighth ICMC managed to bag the first
prize worth Rs 50,000 while Kadambari College and the Spinal Discord of Liberty College bagged the second and third positions respectively. Additionally, the audience favourite award, selected through the results of SMS voting, was won by Sunshine College.
Like every year, the ninth ICMC was a sight to behold for any music lover. Performances by popular bands such as Ugrakarma, Underside, 1974 AD and Jindabaad established a powerful ambience to which the contestants then performed. Audiences soaked up the wild cocktail of rock and metal music from maestros and amateurs alike. Liberty’s band proved to be a major attraction, belting out breathtaking metal core numbers. Formed in the December of 2010, the band has previously won the LA Fest, and is on its way to releasing a new EP.
