Western Union up for women’s football

The All Nepal Football Association (Anfa) and Western Union Money Transfer have joined hands to organise the First Women’s League Football Tournament at Dhangadi, Anfa said at a press meet on Tuesday.

The tournament will feature eight teams, including three departmental teams and a team each from the five development regions, and will begin from December 29.

Anfa President Ganesh Thapa and Western Union’s Kabindra Shrestha singed a Memorandum of Understating in this regard. According to the deal, Western Union has agreed to provide Rs 600,000 for the tournament that has set aside Rs 300,000 for the winning team and Rs 150,000 to the runner-up. Giving emphasis to Western Union’s partnership with the Europa League, Shrestha said that the company has been partnering with football worldwide, and in Nepal too it was interested in giving momentum to its deal with the football association.

The tournament will follow the round-robin format, which means the top two teams from the eight teams will play the finals to be held on Jan 15.

Thapa said that the football association had initially planned on holding the tournament between the clubs of Kathmandu, but the clubs’ involvement in the Martyrs’ Memorial League made them opt for the current format.

To make the tournament more competitive, Anfa has been holding various coaching camps and referee clinic at the venue since Monday.

Meanwhile, a team will be selected from this tournament to play a two-match friendly against Kuwait.
