Anil Mandal’s century helped region no. 7 Janakpur kick start the Pepsi Standard Chartered One-day National Cricket Tournament as they registered a three wicket victory over region no. 3 Kathmandu on Tuesday.
Chasing a target of 186 runs, Janakpur did not have a good start as they lost their first wicket with no runs on the board but Mandal, who had opened the innings, remained 106 not out which included 13 boundaries and a six, as his team accomplished the target in 43.2 overs.
Mandal who had raced to his century in just 112 balls stitched a 84 runs third wicket partnership with Chandan Jha and a 39 runs partnership with Raj Mohammad who had come to the crease after Jha (22) runs got caught by Prashanna Shakya off Niraj Bhattarai in the 30th over.
Mohhamad hit three boundaries on his way to 22 runs before he was trapped leg before by Shakya. Earlier, Niraj Bhattarai and Shakya had scored 38 and 36 runs each as host Kathmandu were bowled out for 185 runs in 46.2 overs at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground, Kirtipur.
Mohhamad, Kumar Prasun and Abishek Jha had shared two wickets each for Janakpur. In the other match held at Engineering Ground, Pulchowk, region no. 8 Pokhara sealed seven wickets victory over region no. 1 Biratnagar.
Spinner, Rahul Viswakarma ended with figures of 6-0-31-4 to pack Biratnagar for 167 runs in 40.4 overs. Openers Nischal Pandey and Arjun Raj Adhikari hit 44 and 49 runs respectively as Pokhara completed the target in 41.3 runs with the loss of three wickets.
Ajay Rajbanshi broke the 78 runs wicket partnership when he bowled Pandey out in the 21st over. Amit Dahal then got rid of Adhikari and Rijan Prajoo. However, Viswakarma remained unbeaten at 39 runs and Deepesh Khatri added 26 runs to turn the match in their favour.
