KATHMANDU, JUN 27 -
Exports of agricultural products to India have increased impressively in the first 10 months of this fiscal year.
The Nepal Rastra Bank’s (NRB) recent macroeconomic report shows exports of cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, green vegetables and turmeric have surged by almost 66 percent.
Of the aforementioned products, cardamom holds the largest share in exports. The NRB statistics shows cardamom worth Rs 2.70 billion was exported to India over the period. Export of cardamom increased by 63.7 percent compared to the same period last year.
FNCCI Agro Enterprise Centre Executive Director Pradeep Maharjan attributed the surge in cardamom exports to steps taken by the government and the private sector.
The Ministry of Commerce and Supply last year distributed 25 units of cardamom proce-ssing plants in five districts of Eastern Nepal.
“The installation of processing plants might have helped improve product quality, boosting exports,” said Maharjan.
The government is planning to distribute an additional 50 processing plants to farmers of Sankhuwasabha, Ilam, Panchthar, Taplejung and Bhojpur by the end of this fiscal year.
As for ginger, there has been a 62.1 percent growth in the export of the spice over the period. The country exported raw ginger worth Rs 323.2 million until 10th month this year, against Rs 199.4 million during the same period last year. Export of dried ginger also increased to Rs 10.4 million from Rs 2.9 million.
Maharjan said they recently started distributing improved ginger seeds to farmers of eight districts, including Dolakha and Sankhuwasabha. “The new seeds, which are free from disease and fibre, are expected to improve product quality,” he said.
As far as vegetables are concerned, their exports almost doubled to Rs 64.2 million.
Trade expert Ratnakar Adhikari said an increase in green vegetable production, mainly in border areas, contributed to the rise in exports. “Besides, Nepali vegetables are also in high demand in the Indian market,” he said.
