Celebrating African-American culture
KATHMANDU, FEB 03 -
A series of events and workshops that will take place across various venues throughout the month of February will mark Black History Month 2012. Black History Month has been organised by the House of Music, Thamel with support from the US Embassy. Beginning from February 3 at the House of Music with Blues @ House, the event will later feature programmes and performances at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory, Satya Media Arts Collective, Ramalaya (Panipokhari), as well as the US Embassy. The month will be a commemoration to the lives of African-American artists celebrated through avenues such as music, film and literature.
Balck History Month is a commemoration of the history of the African diaspora, and is celebrated in a number of countries outside the African continent. The month of February is marked annually as Black History Month or African-American History Month in the US and Canada. The House of Music has organised this celebratory month in Nepal to narrate the African American story. Although blues and jazz—genres that arguably represent the African-American experience and spirit—are gaining a considerable following in the country, the roots of these genres, their history and the history of their original musicians is barely known here. The Black History Month celebration will share the stories of the lives of the African-American people, their lifestyles and their histories.
Every Friday evening, the House of Music will highlight a particular genre of music (blues, jazz, motown, R&B, and hip-hop) and highlight the roles of leading black artists in bringing them into the mainstream. Furthermore, the House of Music is partnering with the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory to host music workshops every Sunday to discuss the historical development of various genres of music, as well as their influences on other genres. House of Music is also partnering with Sattya Media Arts Collective and Quixote’s Cove to host documentary screenings and literature events to showcase other contributions of African Americans in other fields. On February 25, the House of Music will cap off the month-long event with a finale at the Patan Museum that will bring together poets, street dancers, hip-hoppers, R&B, funk, and blues artists on one stage.
