Friday blackest day, Sunday safest: Police

If you call Friday the party day, think twice. Police records of the last three years show Friday is the blackest day in terms of crime. Sunday, by contrast, appears to be the safest day.
According to a compiled police record of the last three years (2065 to 068), Friday tops the crime-chart with 1,771 criminal cases in Kathmandu.
Tuesday (1,468), Monday (1,460), Wednesday (1,447), Thursday (1,362), Saturday (1,283) and Sunday (1,252) follow the list.
Friday has been regular crime-chart topper except in 2066/67 fiscal year when it came second. In 2066/67, Wednesday topped the chart with 618 criminal cases followed by Friday with 511 criminal cases. DSP of Maharajgunj Police Circle Jagdish Pokhrel said late night parties on Friday is one of the main reasons behind high number of crimes taking place on this day.
According to him, Friday cultivates a sense of freedom among the jobholders, who remain busy throughout the business days.
“Most people attend late night parties and drink too much. When one gets drunk, the likelihood of meeting with road accidents or coming blows with friends or family members, wives or husbands is high,” he said.
Police say some criminal intentionally plot crime on Friday due to higher mobility of people in public places. Crime like burglary, robberies are frequent on this day.
DSP Dhiraj Pratap Singh, spokesperson of Hanumandhoka Police Range, said houses of foreign diplomats have been the soft target of robbers on Friday. He said gang fights among young people is equally high on this day.
An analysis of crime recorded in the last year shows Baisakh is the most crime prone month with 445 incidents, while Shrawan is at the bottom with less than 300 cases. this range covers a large swath of area and crowded as well as crime prone places like Thamel, Durbarmrag and Baneshwor. Most of the areas in Baneshwor and other core areas are under Close Circuit Television (CC TV) vigilance. On
the contrary, the Metropolitan Police Circle Baneshwor has lowest crime record.
The record shows there has been significant increase of petty crimes that carry public offense charges like robbery, forgery, thug in recent years.
Police say there has been steady rise in the criminal activities every year. The metropolitan police recorded 2,767 criminal cases in 065/66, 3,340 in 066/67 and 3,937 in 067/68. The cases include serious crimes like murder to drunken driving and fraud, police say.
