KATHMANDU, FEB 02 -

The two factions in the Nepali Congress (NC) seem to have reached closer to a deal on patching up internal differences. Following a two-day informal meeting, Deuba and party President Sushil Koirala are meeting for the first time after the former resigned following differences over the dissolution of the party’s sister wings.

Sources close to Deuba said, though some of the leaders were still urging not to settle for any piecemeal solution, Koirala could take Deuba into his confidence in resolving the most pressing issues, including the election of the dissolved sister wings and appointments of the remaining five members in the Central Committee. The Deuba camp has demanded that all reaming five central members be appointed from its group as Koirala has already unilaterally picked 16 of the total 21members. Though as per the party’s rule, the central members had to be appointed within two months from the election of the party president, it has remained stalled for over a year due to intra-party rifts.

“There are chances of agreement if the party president could settle pending issues through consensus. Since Sushilji is refusing to go for a package deal, the alternative is his commitment to address some other issues which he cannot address right away,” said a Deuba confidante, seeking anonymity. “Deubaji could meet Sushilji Wednesday or Thursday. “Koirala a couple of days ago had expressed willingness to meet Deuba when some of Deuba supporters, including Gopal Man Shrestha and Khum Bahadur Khadka went to Maharajgunj-based residence of Koirala taking Deuba’s message.

Deuba supporters have also urged that the party should remain open regarding the prime ministerial candidate for consensus government. The party establishment has been arguing that as per party’s rules, only parliamentary party leader can be PM candidate.
